7 Steps to Finding Your Inner Light to Get Through the Darkness

Depression is never an easy thing to overcome, but there is light at the end of the dark tunnel. “I wish I could show you when you are lonely or in darkness, the astonishing light of your own being.” ~Hafiz of Shiraz

When I think about the darkness, a black shadow that was cast over my life. I always think of Simon Parks, the man who showed the world that when you die, you do not go into the light, it is a trap, for you are the light shining in the darkness.

I knew something was wrong with me, I was too uncomfortable with myself to even enjoy just one night alone. My life had been turned around, and it felt like I had absolutely nothing left. The healthiest thought I had was knowing that I needed help. I was so tired of feeling deeply alone, I found a “psychologist” who threw a hundred questions at me in a one-hour session.

I felt like I was a lost hope, I was at the end of my rope, unable to go on, and ready to give up. My connection to the light was gone. Then I slowly but surely pulled myself out, and you can too. Know that if you ever find yourself in this position, this is not the end of the rope and you can do this. You can feel better, just remember these things!

  1. This Too Shall Pass

Yes, I know it sounds a little cliché, but it is the truth. Think of it like a tornado swirling around you, you are the eye of the storm. A front row seat to the destruction of everything you have worked so hard to build. But like tornadoes, eventually the rain will halt and the winds will calm. The pieces that remain from the destruction of your former self will soon dissolve and you will find that the only thing that was destroyed was the illusion, the attachment. Allowing for you to rebuild a new, stronger, more mature, and spiritually evolved you, that you did not even know existed. Have faith and this too shall pass.

  1. Accept Your Pain

Yes, that is right accept it. The more you kick and scream, bite, scratch and try to run away, the darker the skies will get. You cannot run away from your pain and you cannot outrun the storm. By embracing your pain and bringing it within to heal, you empower your own growth. Accept what is, what was, and what is yet to come. That is the path to peace.

  1. Loss Allows Space

When everything else has been taken away, you have a choice to mend the pieces that are left or to stay in the shadow lands. When you move in the direction of wholeness, the power of your intention can ignite your own personal revolution.

  1. An Open Mind and an Open Heart Can Turn the Key

It is hard working to generate gratitude and serenity when you are suffering. Luckily, just wanting to be that kind of person can be enough. With your intentions set in the right direction, peace and contentment will find you.

  1. The Darkness Shapes Us

It is only when we are truly alone, without someone else to lean on, left with our own inner solitude that we can undergo a process of change. The introspection that is needed to bring out the light that has dwindled down to nothing but ash and reignite the fire inside our being.

  1. No Matter What You Are Still You

Nothing that happens, no matter how bad, can erase who you are. You are always you, no matter what happens. Experiences may change you, but deep inside there is always that shining seed of self, the blueprint of who you truly are, guaranteeing the possibility of renewal.

  1. Do Not, I repeat, Do not Go Into the Light, It is A Trap!

Upon the dark road you are travelling, do not seek out the light, the illusion, the fallacy and incessant need for all things external. Have no fear, take the darkness as your comfort because you are the light shining in the darkness. You will find your own way out, but never give up hope. I truly hope you find comfort in this article and find your way out.
