Some people are just naturally awe-inspiring, and 20-year-old Pablo Ráez of Marbella, Spain is precisely that sort of person.
Ráez was diagnosed with leukemia in 2015, at which point he was determined to beat the disease. And, after getting a bone marrow transplant and going through several rounds of chemotherapy, he thought he had, as his cancer went into remission.
Unfortunately for Ráez, his cancer returned—and when it did, it proved fatal. Ráez refused to go without a fight, however: He used his last months to inspire others and create change in a way that continues to inspire people all over the world.
Instead of giving up, he fought hard—and engaged in a campaign to help ensure other cancer patients would be better cared for in the future.
Using the hashtag campaign #retounmillón (#onemillionchallenge), Ráez spent his last few months challenging others to donate bone marrow. At the time he began his campaign, there were 230,000 bone marrow donors in Spain.
Ráez refused to be deterred, however, and set his goal extraordinarily high—he challenged people to raise that number to 1 million Spanish bone marrow donors.
He accomplished his goal just before he passed.
“The planet is deteriorating little by little, we are destroying it: we are melting the poles, we manufacture recklessly, we cause wars, kill people and we do so much more that is going to bring this world to its end, and we do all of this because of money.”
“We need to love more, first of all ourselves and then the world. You need to love yourself before you can love others. Let’s smile more, let’s give more hugs, more peace; let’s be the best version of ourselves. Let’s be thankful to life for giving us the precious luxury of waking up every day, let’s be more grateful.”
What wise words from an old soul so tragically lost!
In 20 years Ráez accomplished more than many people will accomplish in their entire lives, and we can look at what change he was able to create as inspiration in our own lives.
