How To Make The Popular and Deceptively Beautiful Raindrop Cake

I am sure you have heard of it, the whole internet is buzzing with news about this creation and I know how to make it! It is not every day you get to take a bite out of a raindrop, but evidentially that day has come!

Behold the Raindrop cake in all its glory! A dessert so beautiful that you should be hesitant to even take a bite.

The jiggly treat, created by New Yorker Darren Wong, is made from mineral water and agar. “This is a unique food experience. Firstly, it looks really cool. It kind reminds me of that scene from A Bug’s Life where they drink water drops off of leaves. Second, the texture is so unique; it’s very delicate and fragile. Third, the combination of textures and flavors goes together so well. There are very few foods that engage this many senses at the same time, which is what attracted me to this dessert in the first place,” says Wong.

The cake is served with two condiments: Brown sugar syrup and Kinako(Soybean flour). The cake itself tastes pretty much like water, but its value is the consistency that slides around on your tongue.

“The cake itself is very mild and very much about the delicate texture the melts in your mouth.”

And, while it looks like it could easily pop, “raindrop cakes” can actually be sliced up and eaten like jello. But, you have to eat it fast, it will melt into a puddle after a half hour at room temperature.

As you will see in the video the cake itself is extremely easy to make! The only thing I did differently was added in some vanilla sugar.

But, if you don’t want to try and make it yourself Wong will be releasing the cake to the United States this year!
