Gelare Jabbari has taken to Instagram to inform the public that she has resigned from her position as a news anchor.
In Farsi she wrote:
“It was very hard for me to believe the killing of my countrymen. I apologize for lying to you on TV for 13 years.”
Rage spread across the country and people poured into the streets after the government initially denied that the passenger jet had been shot down, even though at the crash site missile fragments had been identified.
Videos appeared online showing hundreds of mourners in Iran chanting “death to the liars” (In reference to the current government) hours after the Revolutionary Guards ‘ statements confirming reports of the plane crash.
Many other strong women have followed suit.
In protest at Tehran’s annual Fajr Film Festival, Iranian film director Masoud Kimiai said he was “on the side of the public.”
