This may make some dads out there angry, but according to the findings of a recent study, we inherit the log of our intelligence from the female X chromosome.
The X chromosome is known to contain thousands of genes, and a huge number of them have an impact on our perception too. Until now, it was believed that both the parents contribute equally to the child’s intelligence, but this new research has proven it disputable.
To understand this better, let’s take things to a deeper level.
A chromosome is basically a thread-like formation that is made up of protein and nucleic acids, and it is responsible for transferring and storing genetic information. Every individual has a pair of chromosomes in each cell of their body. The females have two X chromosomes and the males have one X and one Y chromosome.
As per the genetic rule, for a single characteristic of an individual, only one specific gene can be activated. For instance, if a single characteristic is affected via the mother, the fatherly genes for that characteristic will be deactivated. This forms the basis of the intelligence research conducted.
It was found that women had a larger impact on cognitive abilities since women possess two X chromosomes while men carry just one. There’s even more evidence to support this theory of intelligence genetics.
Scientists made use of genetically modified mice to test this theory and they injected embryonic test subjects with maternal genetic chromosomes and found that the subjects developed an improperly larger skull and brain and had a smaller body.
In contrast, when the subjects were treated with larger amounts of paternal genetic material, they developed a large body but a smaller skull and brain. Apart from these, the researchers made other significant findings and identified six areas of the brain that contain only and exclusively maternal or paternal genes.
This theory is not a new one. Earlier in 1984, researchers at the University of Cambridge made attempts to study genomic conditioning and brain development and found that maternal genetic provide more material to the brain centers.
Other similar findings are being made today. In another informative study, a team of researchers from the government agency in Scotland took into consideration a group of 12,686 people between 14 to 22 years of age. Every year, these individuals were monitored and interviews and track was kept about their intelligence development taking into consideration their educational and ethnic backgrounds.
The findings suggested that the mother’s IQ was the best indicator of intelligence in these children.
While these findings won’t be sufficient enough for the skeptics to accept, one thing in certain can be deduced from this, and that is that mothers have a significant influence on the cognitive capacity of children. And that’s not just genetics. Nutrition and nurture also have an influence of the intellectual development of children, all throughout their life.
To add to this, the special bond between the mother and the child can be a good motivation for the child to explore the world and attempt to solve its problems. Women have a huge role to play in the intellectual development of children, even more than the studies that credit them.
